I bought the tools from George`s garage, but you could pull the bearing/gear stuff in with a tool made up of long bolt/pipe or sockets, just make sure you don`t cross load the bearings.

When you install the main drive gear into that bearing, you want your puller to immobilize against the INNER race as it pulls the drive gear into the bearing. You don`t want to cross load the bearing. I think I know someone who can help. The most important thing to remember about installing the main drive gear race into the tranny case is that what ever tool you make must press the bearing in by the OUTER race only. This is on the bottom of the of trans, not sure if the "77" is for a year or not? Not that it matters, I think I have all the right parts just need to find a machine shop that can bore the bushing for me. Just push out the old Torrington and pop in a new one, no sizing was needed.I was under the impression that they stopped making ratchet top's in '78? It definitely has the Torrington bearing though, no loose rollers in any of the bearings, even the countershaft has Torrington bearings The gear rides on the inside of the case, in turn, wear occurs on the case. Machining for the early seal, or maybe the '82- up seal, might be worthwhile though. I would not do another conversion because the payoff just ain't there. In fact the service life is as good or better than the old style bearing. That said, I have seen no evidence that the Torrington bearing is not up to the job. It did not improve the shifting (that's the stupid shift cam plate ) but did allow me to fit the earlier larger main seal, which is definitely better than the '80 - '81 seal. That was an old EasyRiders tech tip to improve 3 - 4 upshifts. Just push out the old Torrington and pop in a new one, no sizing was needed.I kind of agree with this, I even went so far as to convert my '80 FLH transmission to the old style loose roller bearing. Harley did that move to make the service techs job much easier to do, no longer was the need to sweat in a harden case race and line lap to size. The gear rides on the inside of the case, in turn wear occurs on the case. My opinion is that move made it kinda weak, no longer can the end-play on the gear be set. I'm not all that fond of those due to the Mo-Co redesigning fourth gear to use a Torrington bearing. It looks like your tranny is a 79-up model. Need to find someone that can hone this out for me I guess, bearings and all the other stuff should be here tomorrow, hopefully, I can get this thing assembled this weekend! I added a pic of them, the new seal doesn't fit very tight at all, you can push it in with your fingers but appears to be ok I guess? So I definitely need to replace the bushing, is it common to have to hone these out to specs or did I get a dud?Īlso, the mainshaft seal that I took out looks completely different than the ones supplied in this kit (it came with 2 for some reason). 00175"-.00325" and by my measurements, the old bushing is 1.005" and the shaft is dead on 1".

The service manual gives you a measurement of. My question is: The new main drive bushing is about. The kit comes with new bushings for everything but I'm ordering the bearings from JP as well should be here tomorrow. I bought a Jim's 4-speed rebuild kit and an Andrews mainshaft, the one in it was fubar. In the process of rebuilding my 4-speed while Jesse works on the motor.
